The flight from West Coast is about 5 hours. Off-season (Post-labor day to Thanksgiving, post-New Year’s to March/April) is the most reasonably priced time to fly. See www.hawaiianair.com, www.alohaair.com, www.ata.com
 
There are some direct flights but most need to go through Honolulu then a 20-minute flight Lihue, Kaua'i.

Having a car is not vital but highly recommended. We can pick you up at the Lihue Airport but since you will be doing two evening meals on your own and most likely want to spend a bit of time exploring the island, a rental car is advisable. We suggest booking a rental car through www.priceline.com. We have used their bidding system to obtain rates as low as $16 per day.
